| Fantassin 20mm WWII Finnish Basing walkthrough |
| For basing the 20mm Fantassin Finnish we contacted Martin at warbases.co.uk and got him to make us two diorama bases/movement trays. These had 20mm diameter sized indents to allow free placement of the infantry. We also had an extra slot, so we could add a terrain/scenery element to the base. These trays are fantastic for customising scenes as you can pretty much put what you want where you want. The infantry themselves are based on 20mm diameter sized 2mm MDF bases that fit snugly into the recesses but also allow you to game with them. |

The materials you will need for this basing method are:
An artists trowel for applying filler
Brown wood filler or white (you could always add brown paint into the filler before you apply)
Fine brown ballast
Wood/PVA glue
Modelling snow
Cream paint
1 chisel ended brush (for dry brushing)
1 old brush for applying glue
Coffee jar lid/container for wood glue.

 |
Step 1: Add a small amount of water to the filler to make it the correct consistency for the ballast to adhere. Take your artists trowel and add a small amount of filler to the back of it for better control. Spread the filler over the entire base being careful of your paint job.

| Step 2: Whilst the filler is still wet submerge the base in the brown ballast and leave for a few minutes in order for the ballast to adhere to the filler. Then remove your model and lightly tap the underside to remove excess ballast. Place to one side and allow drying time. |
 |
| Step 3: Once the ballast is dry take your chisel ended brush and apply a small amount of cream paint to the end. Brush it lightly on the edge of your palette in order to remove most of the paint so that a thin dry amount remains on the end of the brush. Then brush it gently over the top of the base catching the highest points of the ballast. This creates the illusion of depth and a varied earth. |
 |
| Step 4: Pour some PVA glue into your coffee jar lid or container, then take an old brush and dip it in your glue and apply it to the base where you desire the snow patches to be. Dip your base into the snow and leave for a few minutes to soak. After it has soaked take your model out and tap the bottom to remove any excess snow and put aside to dry. |

Step 5: Repeat this process on the diorama base. Now you can place your miniatures how you like for display.
